Kevin Arnold
Kevin D. Arnold, Ph.D., ABPP is a licensed psychologist, specializing in behavioral and cognitive psychology as evidenced by his Board Certification. But, early in his career, he recognized that his education and training were light on empathy skills. So, he took several years of consultative training in empathy (Kohutian) and schema-focused cognitive therapy. He weaved those skills into what now is know as functional behavior assessment, authoring for the Integrated Functional Behavior Analysis Protocol (IF-BAP) as the recipient of a federal grant to do so. He believes in evidence as the core of changing behaviors, and applies research to improve the lives of children, particularly those with neurodiversity or medical conditions.
Kevin earned his PhD at The Ohio State University in psychology, adding to his studies applied behavior analysis in OSU’s program. His mentor was the psychologist, Thomas M. Stephens, who brought to OSU, the famed trio: Cooper, Heron and Heward. He continued with applied behavior analysis and functional analysis throughout his career, not just authoring the IF-BAP but also training parents, other psychologist and school psychologists on the use of ABA and functional assessments. Specializing in what is often called CBT, he always understood that the core of CBT is applied behavior analysis.
Kevin also served to further the profession on behalf of those in need. He served as the Ohio Board of Psychology’s president one year, was president of the Ohio Psychological Association, of the Council of Specialties in Professional Psychology, the Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology Specialty Council and the American Board of Professional Psychology Foundation. He helped re-write the rules on using psychology interns and residents when serving clients covered by Ohio Medicaid, and built a thriving practice (the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy) that included ABA for children with autism. He had at one point been on the faculty at Ohio State, served as a Commissioner with the American Psychological Association (APA), was president of APA’s Division 42 and is an APA Fellow of Divisions 25 (ABA) and 31 (State, Territorial, and Provincial Associations in psychology). Early in his career he served as the Asst. Director of the OSU Center for Special Needs Populations.
One of the highlights of Kevin’s career becoming the first non-BCBA to be permitted to supervise BCBA candidates, based on his specialty certification in behavioral and cognitive psychology and his work in ABA. All his life he has been an advocate for children and adults with neurodivergent challenges.
